More details about what I do

I live in Ayrshire and usually do visits in Central Scotland.

A later start, means I can go a greater distance.

Always worth having a chat with me.
I provide a range of events for children,
incorporating aspects of the
Curriculum For Excellence.

My aim is to offer fun sessions that give everyone attending a really good time!

And we’ll all learn things too…
If you would like info
on booking a visit
You’ll also find details on fees & costs, handy downloadable forms, etc.

A typical session…

  • Hour-long author (school assembly style) visit, incorporating max 2 classes, where I introduce Porridge the Tartan Cat. We discuss how he came to be tartan, plus his character & humour. I read from Brawsome Bagpipes & also Crash-Bash-Ding. We look at zany word-play, heroism, saving the planet from a giant Clootie Dumpling, putting on a Big Gig, etc. Essentially it’s about stimulating imagination and creative plotting. Followed by a Q&A & book signing.
  • There will be a lot of ‘joining in’, interacting with volunteers, storytelling with props, etc. Ever wondered how you calculate a cats age in human years? (it isn’t just x7)
  • As Gadget Grandad tackles spies we’ll have fun with Acronyms, (S.P.L.O.T. / N.E.S.S.I.E), Homophone mix-ups (Dux/Ducks), Tongue Twisters (Big Abandoned banners left behind on beaches), etc.
  • Hour-long Porridge the Tartan Cat related writing workshop (max 35 children) where I look at key considerations when creating characters.
  • We look at characters from my first two books: Gadget Grandad does nothing on Sundays … because for the rest of the week he is an all-action superstar! Porridge is a reluctant hero who always manages to save the day, usually by unexpected means. Isla and Ross are energetic, adventurous twins and great role-models. Groovy Gran has a secret musical past….
  • We look at differences and similarities, motivations and intentions, etc. Plus, how humour plays a big part regarding empathy with characters. How Porridge describes things using Similes (see sample sheet below)
  • Children could then work on an open-ended writing activity, a) such as describing characters from a book illustration b) drawing a character based on a small text extract. Followed by sharing our work, a Q&A and book signing.
If you are not Live Literature funded, don’t worry. I’m sure we can sort something out. Click envelope to contact me
